Modern Tudor Exterior Inspiration| Exterior Inspiration Series

If you’ve been following along for a while, you might remember an inspirational post I’d put together a few months back that featured Classic Tudor homes. At the time, I’d mentioned that I had started to notice modern versions of the Tudor style emerging throughout social media, so I promised to follow up with a post that featured Modern Tudor exteriors.

Before I jump in, I do want to take a second to acknowledge the difference between the term ‘Modern Cottage’ and ‘Modern Tudor’ as it relates to this post.

There isn’t a clear timeframe as to when the term ‘Modern Cottage’ was established, but the phrase has risen in popularity since mid-2019. In it’s early days, it seemed to apply more to an interior decorating style, but has since grown to encompass an emerging style of architecture containing elements from the Farmhouse, Tudor, English Country, and French Country styles.

Personally, I’m super excited to see a new wave of residential architecture emerging in the home building industry and I’m already planning to do a more in-depth post about it. For this post though, I’ve chosen to highlight what appears to be the most common branch of the Modern Cottage style, which I’m choosing to call the ‘Modern Tudor’ because I feel that is the more technically correct term.

These homes have strong Tudor characteristics including a steeply pitched roof (usually side-gabled); a façade dominated by one or more front facing gables; tall, narrow windows, typically in ganged together in groups; massive chimneys; and a front door and/or entry with a round archway. It’s also typical for a traditional Tudor home to feature heavy timber detailing, but that element has been omitted from these elevations and when combined with a fresh colour palette, the end result is a fresh look that feels modern and timeless at the same time.

I hope you enjoy, happy scrolling!
