How I’m Decorating Our Home for Christmas This Year (Simple, Natural & Intentional)
You know that moment when you realize Christmas is creeping up faster than expected? Mine hit somewhere over the Atlantic on our way home from Europe this past fall — along with the realization that I had basically no décor to work with. And since this is the first year Theo might actually understand who Santa is, I immediately spiraled into panic mode about not doing enough to make the season feel magical.
Of course, I know a perfectly decorated house isn’t what makes Christmas memorable. It’s the traditions, the little rituals, and the moments we return to year after year. But decorating is part of the magic — and it’s definitely not cheap. If I’m being honest, part of the reason we have so little décor is because I’m always afraid of buying something I’ll hate a year later. So because of that, I’m basically starting from scratch.
When we got home, I spent a lot of time researching Christmas décor ideas that align with my style and how we actually live.
Actually, if you feel like going down a similar rabbit hole, I put together a whole post on the Christmas décor trends that stood out to me this year — along with ideas for how to bring each style into your home.
It probably won’t surprise anyone that I quickly realized I gravitate toward minimalistic, natural décor — pieces that feel festive without screaming Christmas! I know myself well enough to admit that by Boxing Day morning, the clutter will be driving me slightly unhinged, so keeping things simple and intentional is key. This year, I’m focusing on greenery in our main living space; maybe next year I’ll branch out into the kitchen… we’ll see.
Christmas decorating, like everything else in our home, will be something I build on slowly and intentionally over time. That’s part of why I wanted to document what I’m doing this year — so I have a starting point to evolve from in the years ahead. For now, I’m focusing on creating a simple, thoughtful foundation that sets the tone for the holidays, knowing there will be plenty of time to layer and refine things as our lives shift and change.
From our house to yours, wishing you a very Merry Christmas.
